What Is the Skin Barrier and How Do You Support It?

Skin can look perfectly ordinary and still feel uncomfortable: tight after cleansing, rough beneath makeup, or sensitive to a product you previously enjoyed. Before adding another active ingredient, it helps to understand the protective layer behind everyday skin comfort.

Your skin barrier helps limit moisture loss and protect against external irritants. An important part of it sits in the outermost layer of the skin, called the stratum corneum. Think of skin cells as bricks and the surrounding lipids as mortar: both contribute to a functioning protective layer.

What can make skin feel less comfortable?

Frequent washing, harsh cleansing, repeated scrubbing, and too many exfoliating products can leave skin feeling dry or irritated. Weather and existing skin conditions can also play a part.

Tightness, flaking, and stinging are reasons to review your routine, but they do not identify the cause on their own. A persistent rash or burning sensation needs professional advice rather than a new collection of products.

Start by asking what changed. Did you introduce an acid serum? Begin washing more often? Add several products at once? Sometimes the most useful adjustment is removing an unnecessary step.

Hydration and barrier care work together

Hydrating ingredients help attract and hold water. Moisturising ingredients also help soften the skin and reduce water loss. This is why a hydrating serum and a moisturiser can have complementary roles.

However, you do not automatically need both. If your moisturiser keeps your skin comfortable, there is no requirement to add a serum simply because it appears in someone else’s routine.

Build around comfortable basics

Choose a gentle cleanser, a moisturiser that suits your skin, and daytime sun protection. Introduce optional products individually so you can judge how each one feels.

If your skin is actively irritated, keep to familiar products you tolerate and pause optional exfoliation. Once it feels settled, you can decide whether an additional hydration step would be useful.

A Melissa step for hydration and barrier support

Our Sea Buckthorn Serum combines ceramides and cholesterol with hyaluronic acid, panthenol, and niacinamide. It offers a hydration-focused step before moisturiser, bringing several complementary ingredients into one formula.

Choose it when your routine needs additional hydration—not simply another bottle.
